Knowing archaeological sites is always impressive. Observing the great works of the past is a fantastic way to understand our present, especially if these sites are underground and under the busiest avenues of Puebla.

In that sense, delving into the underground archeology of Puebla is an experience as captivating as it is exciting.

What about Puebla?

Puebla is a place rich in history and culture. This state, located in the center of Mexico, has many sites and communities to visit. From a town where you can visit a church every year to one of the best gastronomies in the world.

In addition to this, Puebla owns a couple of archaeological sites that, as incredible as it may be, are buried under the new constructions. It should be noted that although these places are artificial and were made for research, today they offer a mystical tour that allows us to see up close the bowels of a city.

That said, here we leave you, for those who want to travel, the secrets that time wanted to hide and that now come to light. Let’s get to know two sites: one in the historic center and the other in San Andrés Cholula.

The tunnels of the historic center

In 2005, the government of the State of Puebla inaugurated an entire tourist complex that it literally called, Los secretos de Puebla (The Secrets of Puebla).

In this tour, which begins on Bulevar 5 de Mayo, you can see a group of tunnels that were buried for many years when the river disappeared from the lives of the people of Puebla. Now, this area has been adapted to offer safety for visitors.

The tunnels of the pyramid of Cholula

Closed for a long time, the authorities recently reopened access to the pyramid’s tunnels. On this tour, with the help of the right people, visitors can discover the secrets of one of Mexico’s most iconic sites.

During this walk you will be able to solve some mysteries: why are there sea shells painted on the walls, what does water have to do with the ancient beliefs and mysticism of the Cholultecas?

Are you ready to learn more about the history of the Conquest of Mexico?

Without a doubt, this will be an exciting experience. After all, being able to enter the bowels of these two sites to learn about the history of the community is as rare as it is great.
