Legend has it that two of Mexico’s most important volcanoes, Popocatépetl  and Iztaccíhuatl, were born from a love story as impossible as it was tragic. These fiery mountains were revered as gods in Aztec mythology, and their significance (both natural and social) is so great that even today, at the foot of these two colossal rivals, visitors still feel a beautiful sense of awe when confronting their true size and learning the sacred tale that unfolds from this place.

And indeed, the volcanoes also compel us to be humble because they stand amid several dozen hectares of valleys within the Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park, one of Mexico’s oldest protected areas. Located within the states of Mexico, Puebla, and Morelos, this area is part of the Sierra Nevada, also known as a Biosphere Reserve. These are the second and third highest peaks in Mexico.

The Legend of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl Volcanoes

The legend of the volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, tells the story of two lovers. It is said that thousands of years ago, amid one of the many battles between the Aztecs and the Tlaxcaltecs, one of the bravest warriors of Tlaxcala, Popocatépetl, fell madly in love with Iztaccíhuatl, the beautiful daughter of the great monarch. When the young man asked her father for her hand, the ruler, not very enthusiastic, accepted the marriage on the condition that he go fight their enemies and return victorious. Achieving this seemed almost impossible since by that time the war had lasted too long.

Determined to do whatever it took, Popocatépetl set out to fulfill his destiny and reunite with his beloved. During his absence, the false rumor of his death reached the princess who, desperate with grief, took her own life. Unaware of this, the young man returned with his mission accomplished and learned the terrible news. The warrior kept vigil over his beloved’s body until he finally gave in to his sorrow forever. The gods covered their bodies so they would remain facing each other, together for eternity, and then they became mountains.

Thus, these two volcanoes became vital to explaining the history of central Mexico: their names were also born from Náhuatl. Iztaccíhuatl means “the sleeping woman,” and Popocatépetl means “the smoking mountain.”

Hike to the Volcanoes in Love

With all that said, it is essential to plan a trip to the foothills of these two great mountains. A park immersed in the most beautiful bursts of nature that offers travelers not only the chance to walk among these legendary sites but also to enjoy a day of fresh air.

We are referring to the Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park, famous for its exceptional biodiversity and rich ecosystems. Thanks to its geographic location and its climatic characteristics, this site is an important sanctuary for fauna and flora, especially endemic species of mushrooms, unique not only in the country but also in the world.

With all this in mind, the best way to get to know this place is on foot, and Rutopía offers the perfect excursion. Walking through these sites is a challenging experience but also a chance to discover Mexico’s volcanoes alongside an expert guide who knows every detail of the history and legend. The difficulty (mostly due to altitude and its effects) is quickly forgotten when the trail is accompanied by such an impressive view.
